Testimonials

“The Louisville Orchestra and I have been very fortunate to work with Chris Kincaid as our audio engineer. His tremendous talent, dedication, and thoughtfulness have been invaluable to the Orchestra, especially as we’ve taken on increasingly ambitious projects. Chris has the versatility to record a full orchestra for a Deutsche Grammophon release and also design amplification for a performance with Yo-Yo Ma, the LO, and chorus in Mammoth Cave National Park. The results are always spectacular! His editing and mixing skills are also exceptional, and he always brings the most positive, creative attitude to every aspect of his work.”

Teddy Abrams, Conductor, Composer, Performer

"I can't overstate how fantastic it was to work with Chris, from the very beginning to the end of my project. He is an excellent communicator, a supportive collaborator, and one of the most knowledgeable and professional engineers I've ever worked with. He showed great respect for my own artistic choices while also making helpful suggestions along the way. His strong musical acumen made both the mixing and mastering easy—an especially challenging thing to do when dealing with solo classical piano! I already can't wait to collaborate with Chris again on my next project. There's no one else I'd rather work with."

Recent Projects

  • Experience

As a Grammy award-winning recording engineer with 15+ years of experience recording, mixing, and mastering classical music, I know how to make your project shine. I have recorded everything from solo oboe to full orchestra with choir. I have worked with artists including Yo-Yo Ma, Yuja Wang, Davóne Tines, Louisville Orchestra, the Kentucky Opera, and Louisville Chamber Choir. I also have 9+ years experience teaching audio and music technology at IUPUI (Indianapolis, IN) and Bellarmine University (Louisville, KY.)

  • On-Location Anywhere

I began my recording career traveling to high school and college orchestra, band, and choral concerts as well as many years of adjudication festivals. During that time I recorded 100’s of regional high school and college ensembles in many different spaces. Everywhere from multi-million dollar halls designed and treated for optimal sound, to gymnasiums designed for sports, not an orchestra. In that process I have developed a deep understanding of how a space impacts the sound and how to get the very best sound out of any space. Recently I found myself recording a massive project with orchestra, choir, and soloists 200 feet underground in Mammoth Cave national park. Part of the challenge and thrill of my work is engaging with the space to capture a sound unique to that moment and location.

  • Love of Sound

At my core, I am a musician and a lover of music. I have spent my life listening critically. My first memories of music are playing Chipmunks and Thriller on my very own record player at age 6. In high school I began learning how to play guitar and cello. I went on to study music and composition at the University of Louisville completing both bachelors and masters degrees in music. I still perform, mostly electronic music and improvisation.

  • The Right Tools

I choose my tools base on what sounds the best and what is most conducive to the act of capturing great music, despite the cost. With that in mind I have selected from the finest audio tools in the world. Microphones by Schoeps, Coles, DPA, Neumann, and AKG. Preamps and converters by Antelope, Sound Devices, CAPI, and JLM. Cabling by Whirlwind and Canare. Software by Avid, Izotope, Fabfilter, Liquid Sonics, Sound Radix, and many others. Since much of my work includes capturing live performances I also have redundant recording systems that guarantee a take isn’t lost to malfunctioning equipment. I have all equipment needed to record 32 channels at 96k or 64 channels at 48k. Basically, I have a recording studio that comes to you.
